The Monocle Café London

The Monocle Café turns the magazine’s worldview into a very small room on Chiltern Street. Pale timber, neat shelves and a soundtrack from Monocle Radio establish the tone, while an international crowd of designers, correspondents and well-organised passers-by completes it. The coffee is the reason to enter: an accurately made flat white or espresso, taken with a cardamom bun or another Scandinavian-leaning pastry. Sandwiches and a compact lunch menu make it useful beyond breakfast, and wine permits the day to slide into an early apéro. Space is limited, so laptops and long meetings require tact; the basement can absorb some overflow, but the best seats remain those near the window or outside when Marylebone cooperates. This is not the place for enormous brunch plates or anonymous takeaway speed. It rewards a newspaper, a notebook and twenty unclaimed minutes. The nearby Monocle shop extends the experience if you wish to leave with a magazine or impeccably considered object. Even sceptics may find the café’s precision rather soothing.
