The Scarsdale Tavern

The Scarsdale Tavern sits just far enough from Kensington High Street to feel discovered rather than supplied. Its cream-painted corner, tucked beside Edwardes Square, opens into the sort of pub room London does particularly well: dark wood, framed pictures, a proper fire in winter and tables close enough for neighbouring conversations to become part of the atmosphere. Fuller’s ales anchor the bar, with London Pride the natural first pint, while the kitchen works from the familiar pub repertoire with more care than ceremony. Sausages and mash, fish and chips, pies and a generous Sunday roast all suit the setting. In fine weather, the small terrace is the prize; on a cold evening, the fire and a second drink perform the same duty. The mood is civilised without becoming precious, and local enough that visitors feel they have briefly borrowed somebody else’s excellent neighbourhood pub. Book for Sunday lunch, arrive early if the terrace matters, and resist the temptation to turn the meal into an itinerary. The Scarsdale is best enjoyed at the pace it quietly imposes.
