Drinks at Reid’s Palace - 1891 Bar

Reid’s Palace has been suspended above the Atlantic since the age when travel involved trunks, telegrams and a certain amount of ceremony. The 1891 Bar keeps the glamour but removes the stiffness. Come as evening begins, when Funchal lights up below the gardens and the sea turns from blue to ink. Cocktails draw on Madeira’s exotic fruit and botanical landscape, while local rum and Madeira wine offer more direct routes into the island. Light bites are available, but the bar is principally about the pleasure of being somewhere: polished glass, attentive bartenders, tropical air and the quiet awareness of more than a century of guests passing through. Live music, often from the resident pianist, gives the room romance without drowning conversation. If the weather is kind, take your drink outside; few hotel terraces manage a better argument for staying another hour. Reid’s is grand, certainly, but the bar’s charm lies in how quickly grandeur becomes ease. One well-made drink here can feel like the opening scene of an old film.
