O Celeiro

O Celeiro is one of those long-established restaurants that seems to have absorbed the conversations of the city. Politicians, businesspeople, regulars and travellers meet in its intimate, rustic dining room, where the tone is refined but never showy. The cooking remains proudly regional: fresh fish, seafood cataplana, fish stew, octopus à lagareiro and espetada are treated as living traditions rather than tourist demonstrations. Ask what came in well, then let the experienced staff guide the order. A small terrace offers a more relaxed mood in fine weather, but the interior has the greater sense of occasion, particularly at dinner. Finish with bolo de mel or a local queijada and a glass of Madeira wine. There are newer, more theatrical tables in Funchal, yet O Celeiro’s strength is continuity - proper napery, attentive service and flavours that do not need an explanation. It is an especially good choice when you want Madeiran food in a grown-up room, or when a celebratory dinner should feel local rather than generically luxurious.
