Do not arrive expecting a restaurant in the conventional sense. Talho Seixal is first a butcher’s shop and then, through fire and sociability, one of Madeira’s most unusual lunches. Choose a beef or pork espetada at the counter, take the seasoned skewer to the communal grill and cook it yourself. The arrangement is gloriously direct: no elaborate menu, no choreographed service and no one else to blame for the precise shade of pink in the meat. What you gain is camaraderie. Locals and visitors exchange advice over the coals, bread and simple drinks appear without fuss, and lunch becomes an event rather than a transaction. The setting is rustic and comfort is basic, so this is not the place for vegetarians, white tablecloths or anyone determined to remain passive.
