Chuecking Tapas Bar

Chuecking’s chief ingredient is its address. Tables spill directly onto Plaza de Chueca, placing a caña, tinto de verano or gin and tonic in the middle of the neighbourhood’s daily parade. The menu covers familiar tapas, tostas, sandwiches and plates to share, sufficient for an uncomplicated lunch or a drink that develops into dinner. Service can be stretched when the terrace is full, and the food is better approached as support for the setting than as a culinary expedition. Choose simple things: tortilla, croquetas, jamón, a tosta or something from the grill. Then watch the square. Morning coffee, late lunch and evening drinks each produce a different crowd, with weekends bringing the highest volume and the longest wait for a table. Prices reflect the position. Indoors is useful in poor weather, but the terrace is the reason to come. Chuecking works best when expectations are correctly placed: you are renting a seat in one of Madrid’s most sociable urban rooms, and the drink in front of you is permission to keep it.
