Le Trumilou

A gloriously unchanged riverside bistrot for prune-studded duck, family-style French cooking and a glimpse of Notre-Dame.

Le Trumilou feels like a surviving piece of post-war Paris, not a newly polished imitation of one. The dining room is dense with paintings and personal history, the tables are close, and the windows look across the Seine towards the Île Saint-Louis and Notre-Dame. Cooking is proudly familial: herring and potatoes, pâté, sausages, beef bourguignon and, most famously, duck with prunes. Portions are generous and flavours direct, so arrive hungry and resist ordering every nostalgic starter. Service has the brisk confidence of a busy traditional house; engaging with it lightly works better than expecting hushed ceremony. A reservation is sensible at dinner, while lunch offers the room in a brighter, calmer register. Le Trumilou matters because it remains itself: affordable by central-Paris standards, full of character and more interested in feeding people than explaining its authenticity.
