Östermalms Saluhall

Östermalms Saluhall is both a working market and one of Stockholm's finest public interiors. The red-brick hall dates from 1888, and its restored iron structure frames counters devoted to fish, shellfish, meat, cheese, produce, chocolate and prepared food. Walk the full circuit before buying: part of the pleasure is comparing displays, asking merchants what is in season and watching regulars collect lunch or ingredients for dinner. Several cafés and restaurants make the hall a destination in its own right, particularly for seafood and traditional Swedish plates. Weekday mornings offer the clearest view of the market at work, while lunch brings the greatest energy and the tightest seating.
