Pelikan

Pelikan is one of the city's great democratic dining rooms: high ceilings, Art Nouveau detail, white tablecloths and enough movement to make a large space feel convivial. Its history stretches back centuries, while the present address has served Stockholmers for more than a hundred years. The kitchen remains devoted to husmanskost—hearty Swedish home cooking—so meatballs, herring, potato, veal, pork and rich sauces are the natural direction. Portions can be substantial; sharing a starter and leaving room for something sweet is wiser than treating the menu as a checklist. Beer and aquavit belong naturally at the table, and the bar is useful if you arrive without a reservation. Pelikan can be busy and brisk, but that energy is part of the pleasure.
