Portal Restaurant

Portal is the sort of ambitious neighbourhood restaurant Stockholm does particularly well: serious in the kitchen, generous in the room and free of unnecessary performance. Chef-owner Klas Lindberg builds dishes around excellent Swedish ingredients, using French technique to clarify rather than disguise them. The menu follows a familiar starter-main-dessert structure, supplemented by changing dishes on the blackboard, so ask what has arrived that day before deciding. Vegetarian and vegan diners are thoughtfully accommodated, while the wine programme is designed to support the food rather than compete for attention. The pale-wood room feels calm and grown-up, making Portal equally suitable for a date, a family dinner or a meal centred on conversation. Reservations are advisable and opening is currently focused on dinner. Portal's achievement is balance: high-level craft, recognisable pleasure and the reassuring sense that the restaurant wants you to relax.
